Today I officially go into production for my last Wheel section of the year (well, we still have the end-of-year commencement issue on Friday, but this is my last REGULAR section). At the 95th anniversary dinner for the Wheel over the weekend, I was talking to the people at my table about how long we've been on the paper, and it struck me that this was really only my first full year being on the editorial board. I've been writing for the Wheel since I was a freshman, but this was the first year that I spent entirely on the board, at this new level of responsibility. Which is crazy, because it's become such a huge part of my life that it feels like it's been insanely longer. (As I was also saying to these people, I complain about it incessantly, but I'd still rather be doing it than anything else.)
So here's one more article of mine for you to check out before we break from the Wheel for the summer! This one's about AdHoc Productions' excellent rock musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. It's musical, it's rock and roll, it's political. It's insanely hilarious. Here's the link for that.
In other news, I'll be in Ireland in two and a half weeks! I didn't realize how soon it was coming until literally just now. I knew it was around the corner, but that number makes it seem so much more real. I'm so so so excited to be abroad for the first time in about a decade. (I was in Paris at age 10, which was of course amazing but there's a certain level of appreciation that you don't quite grasp as a mere preteen.) I'll be staying at a hostel in Dublin for the two weeks I'm there, but I also want to take day trips out to Galway, Cork, and Derry, and possibly even cross over to the UK. London's a bit far for a day trip, but I should be able to at least make it to Northern Ireland for Belfast and then across the Channel to spend some time in Liverpool and places in the northern part of the UK. I have very, VERY distant relatives across Ireland that my mom's been trying to get me to reach out to, and they live in small-ish towns like Tipperary and Mullingar. Just getting used to saying these traditional Irish names is gonna be a struggle! But I can't wait.
And then I'll be back in Atlanta and working at Paste magazine by the end of May. I'm so excited to spend the summer here!
Until next time-
Emelia
